The Light Where She Landed

ARtsway | 2021 installation | 2608 Sullivant Avenue

Luka’s mural was created as part of ARtsway, the mural mentorship program for high school students we co-launched in 2021 along with three other arts organizations from around the city. The mural is located at 2608 Sullivant Avenue, at the corner of Sullivant and Burgess Ave. It’s absolutely stunning, and deserves to be seen in-person.

Luka, a tattoo artist for Evolved Body Art, is a southern California transplant and current Hilltop artist, and this is their first mural in Columbus! Now THAT is setting a high bar! Luka came onto our radar shortly after moving to the Hilltop when they applied for our 2021 Pursuing Good Together mural commission. After narrowly missing out (with an amazing design), we knew we wanted to collaborate with them. When the opportunity to launch ARtsway came up, it was a no-brainer to engage them.

Luka put their heart and soul into this mural, and it shows. It’s a wonderful addition to the neighborhood, and we’re proud of them for creating something so beautiful.

We also owe a huge thank you to Youssef Alaskari, owner of Askari MotorSports LLC, the mural site, for taking a leap of faith and allowing us to put a mural on his wall. Youssef was immediately on-board, and wanted something that the community could enjoy. Mural projects of this size rarely go 100% smoothly, and for every challenge we ran into, Youssef and his team were there to help us however we needed.

Backstory

“This piece in some ways is a love letter to Columbus and to nature. Every part of this piece references Columbus and Ohio: The song sparrow, indigo bunting, sandhill crane, the car, the forest, even the model are from here. I am telling a story that many of us can resonate with, and that’s the feeling of finding home in a place far from where you were born.

The young woman depicted was driving through the woods one day, and her car broke down. At first she panicked. However, when she stepped out and looked around, she saw the sun through the trees. She felt the soft grass. She watched the fireflies dance. She heard the birds singing. Where she came from had neglected her, silenced her, and pushed her to the margins. The noise was so deafening that she couldn’t even hear her own self. But here, she felt peace and oneness with her surroundings that was never possible before. This beautiful place could sustain her and nourish her, and she could find real purpose for her life by living here instead, and learning how to help the birds rebuild their dying population.

If you look next to the car, there are feathers growing out of a tire like cacti. I had this vision of a world where we could propagate feathers like plants and grow bird eggs in trees to help save endangered species. This is the first in a series of murals that feature endangered animals in the region, and ways that we can help.”
